Returning to Lithuania with a Mission to Develop Offshore Wind Energy

Karolis’ journey into offshore energy began fifteen years ago in the United Kingdom. While studying for his master’s degree, he and his classmates chose a project focused on offshore wind turbine foundations. At first, it seemed like a random decision, but very quickly the topic became a discovery that truly captivated him. That was when he first realized how complex, global, and future-shaping this sector really is.

After graduating, Karolis stayed in the UK, where offshore energy was already rapidly developing. In Lithuania, the conversation around it had only just begun, but at the time he was contributing to projects spanning from the US to Japan. Each experience brought new knowledge and strengthened his belief that this was the field where he wanted to keep growing. Ultimately, his decision to return to Lithuania was driven by a desire to apply his expertise where everything was only just beginning.

A Job Where You See the Bigger Picture

Today, Karolis works on one of the most important projects – Curonian Nord, Lithuania’s first offshore wind farm. He leads a team that studies marine conditions and seeks the most suitable engineering solutions. Karolis coordinates geophysical, geotechnical, meteorological, and oceanographic surveys. He says what excites him most is seeing the full picture, connecting different areas, and helping his team grow.

His workday starts simply – coffee, a quick plan, and clear priorities. Since projects move fast, priorities change just as quickly, so the most important thing is to pause for a moment and organize his thoughts.

Challenges and Lessons

The biggest challenge in this role is coordinating different disciplines. Sometimes technical, regulatory, and strategic issues need to be addressed all at once. In such situations, Karolis relies on patience, clear structure, and the ability to communicate simply. “Proactivity in this job is a real superpower,” he says.

In over a year at Ignitis Renewables, Karolis has become even more convinced that the best solutions are born in discussions. “No single person has all the answers, but together we find the best way forward,” he adds.

A Sense of Purpose

For Karolis, returning to Lithuania is more than just a career move. It’s an opportunity to help build a future that matters to the entire country. It’s important to him to see ideas transform into real projects and to know that his work carries a meaning beyond completed tasks.

“When you see that your work contributes to changes that will last for years to come, you feel you’ve chosen the right path,” says Karolis.
