Ignitis Renewables: Lithuania emerges as a European wind power leader
Lithuania has delivered its strongest wind energy performance on record, ranking among Europe’s wind frontrunners in 2025. According to the latest statistics by WindEurope, wind energy covered 33% of Lithuania’s electricity demand. This places Lithuania second in the European Union alongside Ireland and just behind Denmark (50%), significantly above the EU average of 19%.
The pace of expansion was also record-breaking. In 2025 Lithuania connected 759 megawatts (MW) of new onshore wind capacity – a 45% increase over the previous record set in 2024 (522 MW). Overall, installed capacity rose by 43% in a single year.
These changes were quickly reflected in the electricity balance. Wind’s share of Lithuania’s electricity consumption jumped from 21% in 2023 and 27% in 2024 to 33% in 2025. The figures confirm a clear trend – rapid renewable energy deployment strengthens national energy security and significantly reduces reliance on electricity imports.
Ignitis Renewables is at the forefront of Lithuania’s wind expansion
International green energy company Ignitis Renewables is one of the main driving forces behind the breakthrough in wind energy in Lithuania. In 2025 alone, the company connected 314 MW of wind capacity to the Lithuanian grid, representing a substantial share of the country’s total new installed capacities recorded by WindEurope and a clear demonstration of the company’s leading role in Lithuania’s wind expansion.
“Our country's renewable energy potential exceeds domestic demand several times over. With continued targeted development, Lithuania can not only ensure long-term energy security, but also become a significant exporter of green electricity in the region,” says Giedrius Meškelė, Head of Renewable Energy in Lithuania at Ignitis Renewables.
Ignitis Renewables will continue to invest in projects that increase local green generation and flexibility, create long-term value for the Lithuanian economy, strengthen regional energy security, and ensure globally competitive prices for consumers.
