Ignitis Group continues its efforts to attract new talent to the energy sector and to encourage the country's youth to choose this field. For the third year in a row, the largest listed energy company in the Baltic states will grant scholarships to undergraduate electricity and energy engineering students at Lithuanian higher education institutions. In the next academic year, 60 first-year and 40 second-year students will be eligible for scholarships totalling EUR 300 000. The scholarships are part of #EnergySmartSTART, an information and education programme, which comprises various energy initiatives.

Same as in the previous academic year, students will receive EUR 300 a month for 10 months. The scholarships will be awarded by the higher education institutions where you can study electricity and energy engineering. They can apply for scholarships from 3 April to 17 April.

“The energy sector is providing new opportunities for green innovation and new jobs while boosting the economy. The demand for energy professionals is at the breaking point. It will significantly increase in the nearest future This is why it is very important to attract talent to the field that is ready to take on today's challenges and lay the foundations for a more sustainable and secure future,” says Giedrė Žlibinienė, Lead of #EnergySmartSTART Programme.

According to G. Žlibinienė, the scholarship programme, which is starting its third year, is an additional incentive for students who have chosen to study energy studies and can help attract energy and engineering specialists, who are currently in short supply on the labour market. For a long time, engineering studies in Lithuania have been outnumbered in popularity by social sciences and humanities, which is reflected in the shortage of specialists needed for the sector.

“We can already celebrate the upward trend, since last year the number of students who chose energy and electrical engineering studies in Lithuania increased by 30% compared to 2022. Targeted measures, such as scholarships or introducing students to the opportunities offered by the energy sector, certainly contribute to these trends. That is why we plan to continue granting scholarships and carrying out educational activities,” says G. Žlibinienė.

#EnergySmartSTART is an educational programme, initiated by Ignitis Group, dedicated to students and anyone who is thinking about a career in the energy sector or wants to know more about it. The initiative includes tours to energy facilities, lectures at Lithuanian schools and job shadowing, which allows a glimpse into the daily life of energy professionals. This programme and the related initiatives allow young people to learn about themselves and the energy sector as well as help decide on their career path.
