Reserve Capacities

We are providing reserve capacity services to ensure the reliability and security of the electricity system in the region.

Our priority is secure and reliable energy system

Ignitis Group contributes to the reliability and security of the energy systems in the Baltic and Nordic regions as well as to the historic energy transition – synchronisation of the Baltic states’ grid with the synchronous grid of Continental Europe.

The reserve capacities managed by the Group’s subsidiary, Ignitis Gamyba, provide electricity generation services to meet the region's electricity demand during a disruption in electricity supply or if there's insufficient renewables generation.

Kruonis Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant

Kruonis Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant

Kruonis Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant (Kruonis PSHP) is one of the largest energy storage facilities in Europe (900 MW). This facility provides important services of preventing and eliminating energy system failures, thus ensuring the stability of Lithuania’s grid. In the event of an emergency, Kruonis PSHP is the first in line to supply electricity to the 330 kV network until the reserve capacities in Elektrėnai Complex turn on within 12 hours.

Elektrenai

Elektrėnai Complex

Ignitis Gamyba ensures the security and reliability of the energy system by utilising the Combined Cycle Gas Turbine and a reserve power plant, which includes units 7 and 8, at Elektrėnai Complex. All three units combined or each unit individually can be turned on immediately after an emergency in the national energy system after receiving a notice issued by the transmission system operator, Litgrid.

The complex located near Elektrėnai can generate electricity and heat as well as provide additional services, including reserve capacities that ensure the stability, quality and reliability of the grid. In the event of an increase in energy demand, Elektrėnai Complex can meet about half of Lithuania's electricity needs and significantly contribute to the energy stability in neighbouring countries by generating electricity during emergencies.

Key facts

Elektrėnų komplekso pajėgumai – 1055 MW

Elektrėnai Complex capacity – 1,055 MW

Elektrėnai Complex reserve capacity – 1,055 MW. With all the units in operation, the complex can meet about half of the national electricity demand and ensure uninterrupted electricity generation.

Combined Cycle Gas Turbine

A 455 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine is one of the latest energy generation units built in Elektrėnai Complex. The unit can start operating at full capacity within 12 hours of Litgrid’s emergency notice.

Reserve power plant

The reserve power plant includes units 7 and 8 of Elektrėnai Complex, 300 MW each. These units can start operating within 12 hours of Litgrid’s emergency notice.
